Kevin Spacey Talks Gay Marriage At 2008 Happy Hearts Gala

in Celebrities, Politics by Chris on November 20th, 2008No Comments

The highly respected actor Kevin Spacey gave his support and date for one to the highest bidder at Petra Nemcova’s 2008 Happy Hearts Gala.

Two-time Academy Award winner Spacey made it a point to come to the charity event in NYC even with his hectic filming schedule for the upcoming The Men Who Stare at Goats, co-starring George Clooney.

While at the event, he stopped to chat with some of the reporters at the event. CelebsGoneGood was given an exclusive explanation for not only why he is so secretive with his personal life (so people will have an easier time believing who he portrays on the big screen), but also his beliefs on why America will overturn the ban on same-sex marriage for good.

CelebsGoneGood: What brings you here tonight?

Kevin Spacey: Oh you know, anything that can help kids around the world, and I think that what Petra has done is pretty remarkable these last couple of years.

CGG: How do you feel about President-Elect Obama?

KS: Hope is in the air, and it’s palpable. It’s an exciting and generous spirit. And I think that the American public is ready for it, and I think he’s ready for it, and I believe the world is ready for it.

CGG: What about Proposition 8? Do you hope California will fight the ban on gay marriage?

KS: Well there’s no doubt that election night was a bittersweet night. But in some ways, these kinds of setbacks allow for a bigger fight, more challenges, and eventually we’re going to get it right. Eventually the American public will figure out that it really isn’t right to deny citizens basic civil human rights. And we can no longer allow that to happen.
So the fact that these things were voted in, to me, it’s just an example of the fact that they had more money. How much money did the Mormon church put in? So I hope, like Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “Don’t give up. Keep protesting.”

CGG: Do you think that the UK has it right with Elton John pushing for civil unions, not marriage?
KS: Well, I haven’t heard what Elton has said about it, and I don’t really know the particular laws in London with respect to whether they just have civil unions or…Look, I think at the end of the day, if people are given rights, and the same basic rights that any individual is given, then we are in fact honoring the Constitution of the United States. Anything less than that is unfair.

Barack Obama Keeps Daughters Out of Limelight and Hannah Montana

in Movies/TV, Politics, Television by Chris on November 12th, 2008No Comments

Reports of having President-elect Barack Obama’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, guest starring on Disney’s hit sit-com Hannah Montana looks doubtful.

We reported earlier that producers of the show had wanted the future first-daughters to come onto the show for a quick cameo when star Miley Cyrus thought it would be cool to have them on the show. Disney Channel bosses released a statement,

We’re pleased that Malia and Sasha are fans and, as long as their parents say it’s okay, they are invited to the set of Hannah Montana, and all Disney Channel shows, for a guest role or a visit, anytime.”

Billy Ray Cyrus, father to Miley both in real life and on the show, was the one who let the cat out of the bag to Access Hollywood saying that they probably would make an appearance on the show, but Obama isn’t on the same page as him.

An Obama aide told the New York Daily News,

It’s a generous invitation, but they simply aren’t going to be making decisions of that kind right now.”

We didn’t elect Obama just because he is black, but because he is highly intelligent. Who wouldn’t want to keep their daughters out of the limelight after the last 22 months of constant campaigning? Obama told Good Morning America,

Generally, what makes them so charming is the fact that they’re not spending a lot of time worrying about TV cameras or politics, and we want to keep it that way.”

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Hopes Proposition 8 Gets Overturned

in Politics by Carolina on November 10th, 20081 Comment

Proposition 8 might have passed thanks to conservative, narrow-minded people, but on Sunday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gave Californians a twinkle of hope when he expressed that he wants the California Supreme Court to overturn Prop 8. He also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have already wed would not see their marriages nullified by the initiative.

He told CNN,

It’s unfortunate, obviously, but it’s not the end. I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area.

The Govenator can be a bit confusing, however. In past statements, he has said he believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman and has rejected authorizing same-sex marriage. Yet he has also said he would not care if same-sex marriage were legal, saying he believed that such an important societal issue should be determined by the voters or the courts.

But on Sunday, Schwarzenegger publicly opposed Proposition 8, which amends the state Constitution to declare that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

He left supporters of gay marriage with wise advice from a lesson he learned durng his days as a bodybuilder trying to lift weights that were too heavy for him at first.

I learned that you should never ever give up. . . . They should never give up. They should be on it and on it until they get it done.

HBO Buys Rights To Obama Documentary

in Celebrities, Politics by Carolina on November 9th, 2008No Comments

HBO reached an agreement with actor Edward Norton’s production company, Class 5 Films, to air a documentary about Barack Obama’s journey into the White House that has been in production since 2006.

According to HBO’s release, directors Amy Rice and Alicia Sams had “unprecedented and exclusive access to the senator and his campaign.” In addition to documenting “Obama’s historic rise,” the film will be “examine American politics and culture through the prism of his candidacy.”

Norton originally approached Obama and his staff several months before the senator announced his candidacy for presidency. He explains,

Senator Obama’s history making race for the White House has given our film a perfect framework to explore the pulse of the country at this vital moment in our history. We believe this film will capture a tipping point in American history when a new generation of leadership emerged and old prejudices were finally vaulted over.

Ahh, Ed Norton. So dreamy. Here’s him as Monty Brogan in 2002’s “25th Hour” delivering quite a powerful rant.

Edward Norton Documentary Shows Obama’s Race In Politics

in Movies/TV, Politics, Television by Chris on November 7th, 20081 Comment

Edward Norton has transitioned his next producing credit into a documentary about President-elect Barack Obama and has given the U.S. rights to HBO for seven figures.

Back in ‘06, Class 5 Films, Norton’s production company had approached Obama with the idea of a project documenting his historical race in politics. Shooting non-stop since 2007, they are compiling the footage together to show the pivotal moment in our nation’s history.

Radar quotes Ed Norton saying,

Senator Obama’s history-making race for the White House has given our film a perfect framework to explore the pulse of the country at this vital moment in our history.”

Now you will be able to see the back-stage story of what went on with Obama’s fight to the White House. It’ll be interesting to see the politics behind the biggest presidential election our nation has ever partook in.

Melissa Etheridge: Gays Don’t Get Rights, California Won’t See Taxes

in Celebrities, Politics by Chris on November 6th, 2008No Comments

With California passing the ban of same-sex marriage, you can imagine the amount of people heartbroken that their way of life is treated as sub-human. Melissa Etheridge, the talented and wise singer/songwriter, makes a great point for married gay people in the state. She wrote at the Daily Beast,

Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now.

Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.

Okay, cool I don’t mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too.

Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We’re gay!

So true, sooo true. This is only a little chunk from her article, if you’d like to read the rest of her views CLICK HERE.

Ellen DeGeneres Disheartned by Passing of Proposition 8 Banning Gay Marriage

in Celebrities, Politics by Carolina on November 6th, 2008No Comments

Although we took a huge step forward by putting Obama into office, Californians believe we simultaneously backtracked by voting yes on Proposition 8, which states that marriage should be kept between a man and a woman.

Ellen DeGeneres says she is “saddened beyond belief” by the passage of the constitutional amendment in California which bans gay marriage.

She told the Associated Press on Wednesday,

Like millions of Americans, I felt like we had taken a giant step toward equality [by electing Barack Obama as president, but with the passage of California's Proposition 8] we took a giant step away.

Lucky for DeGeneres, she got a chance to wed longtime girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi in August after a May Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage in California.

She contributed $100,000 to fight the amendment on Tuesday’s ballot and although it was not victorious, she asserts she will “continue to speak out for equality for all of us.”

Celebrities Congratulate Barack Obama On His Victory

in Celebrities, Politics by Carolina on November 6th, 2008No Comments

Everyone wants to know what the celebrities who endorsed Barack Obama are thinking and feeling on this day of historical achievement. Thankfully for us, BBC has compiled a massive list of quotes from stars of all calibers.

Read the reactions below…

George Clooney:
“I congratulate President-elect Obama on his historic victory and now it’s time to begin unifying the country so we can take on the extraordinary challenges that this generation faces.”

Tracy Chapman:
“This is a hugely significant day. I spoke to a friend who recalled that her grandfather was able to vote with great difficulty in his lifetime - he died only recently.

“There’s been discrimination and all kinds of obstacles placed in the way of African-Americans and to now see an African-American president is momentous.

“My friend was crying saying we are experiencing this moment in our lifetime.”

Spike Lee:
“It’s a great day, it’s a beautiful morning, a new dawn, a new beginning - not just in America but the world over.

“I think race has always been interwoven in the fabric of America but, in this referendum of the American people, there’s been a seismic movement as far as American views on race in this country.

“I think that’s a lot to do with young white Americans - they don’t have the same views as their parents.”

Oprah Winfrey:
“It feels like hope won. It feels like it’s not just victory for Barack Obama. It feels like America did the right thing.

“It feels like there’s a shift in consciousness. It feels like something really big and bold has happened here, like nothing ever in our lifetimes did we expect this to happen.

“It feels like anything is now possible.”

P Diddy:
“I felt like my vote was the vote that put him into office. It was down to one vote, and that was going to be my vote.

“And that may not be true but that’s how much power it felt like I had.”

Usher:
“This will go down in history, in black history, for all of the sacrifices that the great Joseph Lowery and Martin Luther King made, this actually pays off for their sacrifice. The great Rosa Parks.

“So many people sacrificed for us to have a voice. It was one thing to have a voice but, to eventually know the best way to use it and then it grows into this, it’s just incredible.

“I’m speechless. I don’t even know what to say.”

Eddie Izzard:
“It’s fantastic, as I’m someone who would have voted for Obama but I can’t.

“I find it very exciting to be here [in the US] because I’m someone who knows how it works in the UK and, here, it’s slightly different but essentially the same and it’s just been great to watch it go down.”

Pete Wentz:
“I would not be standing here actually in reality, at all, because my parents met working for [vice president elect] Biden.

“They met on a campaign so they have this particular affection for Joe - he came to their wedding. If it weren’t for Joe Biden, I would not exist as a human being.”

Ricky Gervais:
“I think it’s the most exciting election for Americans, from what I’ve heard, ‘cos it’s a clean break and just everything about Obama’s so charismatic.

“David Brent would vote for Barack Obama. Definitely. He’d love to be on the side of the fact this could change the American landscape.”

Dave Fulton
“After living in the UK for eight years and having to put up with all the stick from my comedian friends about America and all the jokes, it’s so nice to finally go: ‘See? Our country works’.

“Now and then we can get it right, so I’m totally digging it - it’s fantastic.”

Pete Wentz Credits Joe Biden As Parents’ Match Maker

in Celebrities, Politics by Chris on November 5th, 2008No Comments

Fall Out Boy pretty boy Pete Wentz is very happy with the results of the election, since he essentially owes his life to our new vice president Joe Biden.

Pete’s family have always been strong supporters of the Democrat Party and Wentz gives credit to Joe Biden’s political career for bringing his parents, Dale and Pete, Sr., together.

I would not be standing here actually in reality, at all, because my parents met working for Biden.
They met on a campaign so they have this particular affection for Joe - he came to their wedding. If it weren’t for Joe Biden, I would not exist as a human being.”

It must be pretty thrilling to see their ‘match-maker’ be elected to serve as vice president.

Carrie Underwood: Voters Swayed By Celebrity Power

in Celebrities, Politics by Chris on November 5th, 2008No Comments

Country singer Carrie Underwood was a little less than pleased with her fellow celebrities on their publicly vocal support for politicians.

The former American Idol winner doesn’t think it’s right for celebrities to openly support any politician insisting voters’ decisions shouldn’t be swayed by the power of celebrity.

Our new President Obama, though it was clear he would win by a landslide, was backed by most of the big-name stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Lindsay Lohan, Hayden Panettiere and P Diddy along the road to victory. The most powerful celeb to back him was Oprah Winfrey, who had never openly supported any candidate in the 25 years she was on television.

Carrie makes a good argument telling TV Guide,

There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly. I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate. It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions … music is where you go to get away from all the BS.”

I understand where you’re coming from, Carrie, but this country has always been set up on freedom of speech. Though it’s true, the general public can be swayed by a celebrity’s opinion, you have to remember that most of the people think celebrities are all a little cuckoo living in their own little bubble.
