Box Office Update: Get Smart Dominates The Love Guru

It was a comedy showdown at the box office this weekend, but Steve Carell has proven to beat out Mike Myers as the funny man in town.

Warner Brothers’ Get Smart opened number 1 in the box office with an estimated $39.2 million in domestic ticket sales. Mr. Carell can sleep easy knowing this was his best opening weekend for any film he’s been the lead in.

Compared to other comedy spy feature films, Get Smart didn’t come close to Austin Powers in Goldmember, which made $73 million in it’s first weekend. Mike Myers had the good life back in 2002, but now he’s struggling to entertain audiences with his new Love Guru character he spent years perfecting. It premiered at 4th in the box office with an estimated $14 million domestically. Ouch!

The industry execs have been weary of this weekend thinking it to be a harsh competition. Think about it, very similar style comedy makes for the same demographic. So the audience has spoken and Steve Carell takes the lead as America’s funny man. But Mike Myers is always dear to our hearts. C’mon, he was in So I Married An Axe Murderer after all.

Kung Fu Panda came in 2nd for the weekend with $21.7 million in ticket sales, bringing in a total of $155.6 million. The panda was followed very closely behind by The Incredible Hulk earning $21.6 million, giving it a total of $96.5 million to date.

  1. Get Smart looks okay over all though Steve Carell seems to be veering more and more toward not so funny slapstick humor
