The Panda Served The Zohan At The Box Office

It was a karate-filled premiere weekend at the box office as Dreamworks’ “Kung Fu Panda” duked it out with Adam Sandler’s “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan.” At the end of their first weekend, Zohan couldn’t mess with the Panda.

The moviegoers wanted to hear Jack Black as a panda who longs for martial arts glory, giving the DreamWorks Animation comedy $60 million. They were only hoping for a $40 million opening, so distributor Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks can celebrate.

The Zohan still gave one hell of a fight, ending the weekend with an accumulated $40 million nationwide. The film features Sandler as an Israeli commando-turned-NYC hairdresser who wishes to style women’s hair. Adam is most likely taking this as a victory since it was only expecting to make in the mid-high $30 million range.

In third was “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” earning $22.8 million in it’s third weekend with a total of $253 million. What a huge success for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. In fourth place for the weekend was “Sex and the City” making $21.3 million and $99 million total.
