Madonna made a big impact at the Tribeca Film Festival this year showing us more of her serious side with the debut of her documentary, I Am Because We Are.
The documentary strikes an emotional cord about the conditions orphans face in Malawi. I’m pretty impressed that the pop queen wrote and produced this and that this was the director’s debut film, Nathan Rissman, her nanny’s husband.
Why would Madonna not go with a big name director, and risk it with a first-timer? Ok Magazine reported that Madonna said,
“He basically re-routed the electricity in my house. He’s looked after my children. He did everything, and started making home movies of my children. He’s very creative.”
What a lucky bastard, he went from maintenance to director all with the help of one of the most successfull women in society. It’s crazy what power can do! But it’s probably not going to go to his head, Madonna also stated, “he has a lot of humility, which I thought was a good quality to have.” Well that’s just swell.
Madonna has a powerfull message to bring to the public about the country she’s adopted from. Her son, David Banda, was adopted there in 2006. Her main message to everyone:
“Even if it’s writing letters to kids that live in clinics, and sharing your experience with the documentary, it’s an amazing thing to connect to them and find out what’s going on. Just educating yourself about what’s going on in Africa would be great.”
